Darren Aronofsky Responds to 'mother!' Getting an F CinemaScore Grade

Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky attend an AMPAS screening of their movie mother! at the MoMA on Thursday (September 21) in New York City.

The film has been very controversial and it received an “F” CinemaScore grade from opening night audiences last weekend.

Darren is now responding to the reaction from audiences.

“What’s interesting about that is, like, how if you walk out of this movie are you not going to give it an ‘F?’ It’s a punch. It’s a total punch,” Darren said in a new Q&A (via THR).

“I realize that we were excited by that,” he added. “We wanted to make a punk movie and come at you. And the reason I wanted to come is because I was very sad and I had a lot of anguish and I wanted to express it. Filmmaking is such a hard journey. People are constantly saying no to you. And to wake up every morning and get out of bed and to face all those ‘no’s, you have to be willing to really believe in something.”

FYI: Jennifer is wearing a Brock Collection bra top and dress.

Paramount Exec Defends 'mother!' & Darren Aronofsky's Vision

The new movie mother! did not get a great reaction from opening weekend audiences and became one of the rare films to ever receive an “F” grade from CinemaScore.

Now, an executive at Paramount Pictures is defending the movie and director Darren Aronofsky‘s vision.

“This movie is very audacious and brave,” Paramount worldwide president of marketing and distribution Megan Colligan told THR. “You are talking about a director at the top of his game, and an actress at the top her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold. Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.”

While audiences did not connect with Jennifer Lawrence‘s new movie, critics had a favorable opinion. The film has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jennifer Lawrence Reveals Why She's Taking a Break From Hollywood

Jennifer Lawrence has announced that she is taking some off from Hollywood.

While promoting her new film mother!, the 27-year-old Oscar-winning actress shared that her schedule is free for the next two years.

“I’m taking one [a break]. I don’t have anything set for two years,” Jennifer shared on The Today Show. “I don’t know [what I'm going to do]. I don’t know, start making pots? I think I’m just taking a little break. I’ll see you in six months.”

Over the past seven years, Jennifer has starred in several blockbusters including The Hunger Games series, Silver Linings Playbook, Joy, and Passengers.

Jennifer went on to say that she’s ready for some time out of the spotlight to enjoy her privacy.

“[People] feel so entitled to everything,” Jennifer said. “You know, like when I’m getting photographed just like walking to Starbucks, I’m like why does anybody feel—why do you feel entitled to this? [At first,] I was angry and resentful because I thought that I deserved the right to do what I love and to do my job, and then still have privacy, and then after a few years you’re like, but that’s not the way it is, it’s just not.”

Jennifer Lawrence's 'mother!' Gets a Rare F CinemaScore

Jennifer Lawrence‘s new movie mother! is in theaters now and audiences are not responding to it in the way the filmmakers might have hoped.

Critics gave the film favorable reviews and it currently has a 69% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but CinemaScore, which tracks audience reactions on opening night, has given the movie a rare F grade.

There aren’t that many movies that have received an F grade, with some of them being Brad Pitt‘s Killing Them Softly, Cameron Diaz‘s The Box, Lindsay Lohan‘s I Know Who Killed Me, George Clooney‘s Solaris, and Richard Gere‘s Dr. T and the Women.

One of the reasons why the movie might have received this grade is something that Jennifer even pointed out during her Late Night interview – the movie isn’t exactly a horror even though it’s billed as one. Audiences who went to see mother! expecting one movie, likely left feeling they saw a different one and gave a negative rating. The film is also very disturbing, so it’s likely that some people can’t handle the subject matter.

Regardless, you should see the movie to form your own opinion if you think you can handle the content!

Jennifer Lawrence Had to Explain the Kardashians to Javier Bardem

Jennifer Lawrence may be a total Kardashians expert, but her mother! co-star Javier Bardem had no clue who they were!

While on the film’s set, Jennifer had her own “Kardashians tent” to escape the movie’s intense environment and she had to explain it all to Javier.

“She told me once about the Kardashians. Now I know more about who they are, but at the time, I didn’t know who they were,” Javier explained to MTV.

He added, “She was laughing at me so hard, You don’t know who the Kardashians are? Like she was talking to me about Einstein. ‘No, I don’t know who those people are. Who are them? What’s their planet? Where are they coming from? What do they want? Where is the spaceship?’”

Jennifer Lawrence Wanted to Play Serena on 'Gossip Girl'!

Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz is revealing that he almost had a very different actress portraying the character Serena on the hit show: Jennifer Lawrence!

Josh revealed in a Vulture interview that Jennifer originally auditioned for the iconic Serena van der Woodsen role, which ultimately went to Blake Lively.

“We did not realize this at the time, but Jennifer Lawrence really wanted to play Serena and auditioned. This story came to us secondhand, but we were told she definitely auditioned and was bummed to not get it,” he explained.

“We can’t remember if we saw it or not. It was ten years ago, and she would’ve been how old, 15?”

It’s safe to say Jennifer is handling the rejection just fine these days. Could you imagine her playing Serena on the show?
